About MarkMark Gomez has been a health educator for nearly 20 years and a lifelong sports and fitness enthusiast. Early daysGrowing up in Florida, Mark showed an early interest in classical dance and most of the major sports. In grade school, he studied ballet and tap dancing, and in high school, he played football, baseball, and was a pole vaulter on the track team. At the end of his senior year, he was named to the All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State football teams. Upon graduation, he was recruited and attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. His interest in sports eventually led to an interest in fitness and sports nutrition. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Florida with a Master’s of Health Science Education. Clinical behavioristAfter receiving his master’s degree, Mark moved to California where he became employed as a clinical behaviorist for the Weight Management Program, affiliated with California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Here, he taught nutrition to morbidly obese patients and facilitated weight maintenance groups. Later, he opened his own consulting business in downtown San Francisco where he worked with people on a wide variety of wellness concerns, including weight loss, fitness program design, nutritional planning, smoking cessation, and stress management. Stanford UniversityDuring this time, Mark attended the University of San Francisco where he studied counseling psychology for nearly two years. As he approached graduation time, he switched his focus from counseling to health psychology and transferred to Stanford University in Palo Alto. In 1994, Mark graduated from Stanford University with his second master’s degree in Health Psychology Education. From 1994 to 2004, Mark worked for Kaiser Permanente, the world’s largest non-profit HMO, in their Northern California Regional Health Education office. There, he designed preventive health and fitness programs and systems for over 3 million members. Weight gainDuring the time that Mark worked with Kaiser Permanente, he experienced what many of his clients had already experienced: a weight gain. To address this, Mark rededicated himself to fitness and eating properly. Within a year, he lost 30 pounds and was back to his former self. From this experience, Mark learned first-hand about the health consequences of carrying extra pounds, the difficulty of changing one’s behavior, and the benefits of finally losing excess weight. Whereas before, he knew of these struggles only from his clients, now he had personal experience of the difficulty involved with making these kinds of lifestyle changes. His missionIt was during this time that Mark truly found his calling in life and decided to employ his skills with helping others to make difficult changes. At mid-career, it was time for him to move in a different direction. In the fall of 2005, Mark and his wife, Terri, began looking for a new city in which to open a health and fitness consulting business. After a nationwide search for an ideal town, they chose Fort Collins, Colorado, largely because of its size, proximity to a major university, good weather, and active lifestyle. New ventureTheir new business opened in January 2006 and is called Four Seasons Health and Fitness. Mark takes an educational and behavioral approach to working with his clients—combined with a fitness program of his own design called The Movement Method™. |
